Website Security &
Maintenance

More than 30,000 websites are hacked each day. It doesn’t matter what platform you use for your website; it can still get hacked. What is important is that your developer programs the website to be as secure as possible. Make sure your web developer/designer understands the nuances of what this means.

More than 42% of existing websites are built using WordPress and many developers don’t understand that they could be introducing MalWare into a new website just by the plugins they use, among other things. This poor practice of not securing a WordPress site properly has caused WordPress to have a bad reputation of being hacked easily.

It’s not WordPress that causes the problem, it’s how secure your website was designed that matters. Also, all websites regardless of whether it’s on WordPress or some other platform, should be updated and maintained on a regular basis to ensure that your website remains safe and secure.

Hackers use bots to scour the Internet for websites. You are almost guaranteed that your site will be found. But once your site is found, whether the bot can get into your site or not, is what determines the future of your website.

If you are locking down your site properly from the start, working with a knowledgeable developer, and using a well-known security plugin, then you can safely block these bots from accessing your site after they find it.

But if you aren't taking the necessary safety precautions on a monthly basis, then you are taking a risk of losing your entire website and all it's content.

What can hacking do to your website?

When hackers get into your site, they install what is called Malware.

They install backdoors to your website, which can help them to gain access to your server and modify your website settings and take over any sites on that server.

They can redirect your visitors to their own website pages instead of yours, or they will place their spam links on your site in a variety of places. These links are usually related to porn, gambling, illegal activities, counterfeit goods, pharmaceutical, and other black market activity.

They will add code to your website that will break your pages more and more every time someone tries to access your site.

Your website can eventually be completely taken over.

Once these links and redirects are placed on your website, your domain will start to become blacklisted, and your visitors will no longer be able to access your website.

An unmonitored, unsecure website that isn’t scanned for MalWare regularly could contain spam and continue to be hacked undetected by you for a long time until your website becomes completely unusable and un-recoverable.

How do we handle this problem?

When Reddington Solutions maintains our client’s websites, there are a variety of plugins that we use and monitor on a regular basis to lock out these bots from hacking in. We also regularly scan, update, secure and monitor the websites to help keep them safe and ensure someone hasn’t managed to hack in. The sooner you can detect a hacker, the sooner you can clean your website before it gets completely taken over. We ensure there are clean and easy to access backups that we can use to restore a website in the rare case that a hacker has managed to bypass all the security that has been put in place and monitored.

Reddington Solutions stays up-to-date on security measures that WordPress websites should follow on a regular basis. With our maintenance program we are taking security measures as needed and on a regular basis every month, locking down, monitoring logs, making updates and changes as necessary, double checking that your site is working as it should.

How much would it cost you to replace your content if you lost it all?

When your website gets hacked, it can often be cleaned and fixed, but that’s not always the case. Sometimes clients lose a good portion of their website and in the worst case, they lose everything.

Think of the cost if you replaced everything: factor in  the cost of building a new website, as well as the cost of re-writing all of your content.

Here’s a calculator I found that will help you to calculate how much your content might be worth to you: Content Replacement Cost Calculator
